Quiet Alaska Times

One of our first land stops was the townsite of Sumdum, Sanford Cove, near the mouth of Endicott Arm. Little is left of the town besides pilings. Afternoon light backlit this tiny fern growing on a moss-covered piling.
The night before our day with the bears at Pack Creek, we anchor at nearby Tiedeman Island. Our wonderful cook Megan explores intertidal life from a kayak while late evening light casts a glow on the fucus seaweed. Taken at near ground level with a 20mm wide-angle lens.
In the rainforest of Southeast Alaska, moss and ferns provide a green, green wonderland. Image made with a macro lens using Velvia film.
Sphagnum moss festoons this partially downed tree on Tiedeman Island.
Alpenglow illuminates Sumdum Glacier above Endicott Arm.
Incredibly colored scyphozoans (misnamed jellyfish) crowd the protected cove of Chapin Bay on the south shore of Admiralty Island.
In Petersburg, an aggressive crow seeks out tidbits near the boat harbor.
In Petersburg, these bright boats make for a lively pattern.
When in Juneau, consider taking the Mt. Roberts tram. Bring along a sturdy pair of hiking boots, quickly hike away from the cruise ship crowds, and enjoy beautiful vistas and tundra wildflowers, such as these dwarf fireweed. Juneau is barely visible in the distance.
This photo doesn't begin to capture the luminescence of a sunset over Admiralty Island, as seen from The Brothers. A 20mm wide angle lens gives the illusion of a curved ocean surface.
