Photoshop for Photographers

10 to 5 p.m., Saturday, March 24, Conference Room, El Dorado Arts Council, 459 Main Street, Placerville. Check the Arts Council website for map/directions.

In response to several requests, I am repeating a one-day intensive on how to use Adobe Photoshop to enhance your photographs. A fellow photographer recently compared photography to making a fine wine: plant and nurture the vines in the right soil, pick at the right time, but there's a lot more that happens after the grape is picked. Photoshop--the industry standard photo processing software--is like this, taking your "okay" image to something even better. No, you won't learn Photoshop in a day, any more than you could learn winemaking in this short time, but this will at least get you started. Whether you're bringing the best out of that grape or from that digital capture (the fancy name for snapping a photo these days), careful attention to detail is vital.

The Schedule

10 a.m. to noon: Introduction and overview of the Photoshop workspace.

Noon to 1 p.m. Lunch (group lunch at Cascada, or you may go your own way, and you are responsible for paying for your own lunch).

1 to 5 p.m.: Layers (including layer masks and blending modes), sharpening, exposure and white balance corrections, Camera RAW, third-party filters and special effects, enhancing landscapes, portrait retouching and more as time allows. We'll look at some of your problem images and suggest ways to improve them.

What to Bring

Laptop with any version of Adobe Photoshop, plus some sample images. If you don't have a laptop and/or Photoshop, that's okay; you'll just get to look at someone else's work. Or you can bring a flash drive or CD with some images.

Parking

Parking is limited in downtown Placerville. However, on Saturdays you can park for free behind the El Dorado County Courthouse (two-story white building) in the slots that say "leased parking."
