Glacier Bay 2005

Heading north, we enter the land of glaciers for which Glacier Bay National Park is aptly named. After a few hours we arrive at Reid Glacier, unique in that the terminus is accessible by foot at low tide. (Just a few years ago, it was a tidewater glacier calving its bergs directly into the sea.) Below, our naturalist, Nicholas, inspects some of the icebergs close up. Below right: the blue ice that is just above Nicholas's head is photographed with a telephoto lens.

Above and right: Awed by the massiveness and colors of the ice, our group explores the terminus of Reid Glacier. Below: covered by ice only a few years ago, the cliffs near the glacier already sport these dwarf fireweed wildflowers.
Left: near Reid Glacier, torrents of water roar past mossy rocks. Above: the Delphinus, our shipboard "home." Right: Glacier Bay is popular with kayakers.
