Glacier Bay 2005

First stop: the Marble Islands. Using the 50-foot Delphinus as our floating photo platform, we spent more than an hour at the Marble Islands in Glacier Bay. Right: Steller sea lions jealously guard rocks just south of the islands.High peaks of the St. Elias Range loom in the distance. Below: a huge Steller sea lion bull tends to his harem. Below right: Black-legged kittiwakes, a species of gull, noisily wheel near their nests perched on steep cliffs.

Wary of humans: a tufted puffin (below) and sea otter (right). Otters in particular have reason to be frightened of people, as they were hunted nearly to extinction by Russian fur hunters in the nineteenth century. [Note: both photos have been cropped slightly.]
