Glacier Bay 2005

We compressed what feels like a lifetime's worth of experiences into only seven days--five days on the 50-foot Delphinus preceded by two days in the little town of Gustavus, a village sprawled on flatlands at the mouth of Glacier Bay. The trip lasted from June 28 to July 5 (from June 30 to July 5 on the boat). The weather was cool, but the memories are fabulous.

In Gustavus, our friendly and luxurious base was the Gustavus Inn, a 1920s farmhouse converted to tourist lodgings. The three meals per day served here include fresh veggies from this garden plus fresh-caught seafood such as halibut, salmon and Dungeness crab, all exquisitely prepared. Yum!
At the lodge, guests can lounge on an expansive deck or hop one of the free bicycles for leisurely transportation around the sprawled out community. More ambitious folks enjoy local kayaking, whale watching, fishing, or touring nearby Glacier Bay.
