In Dundas Bay, black bears seemed to be everywhere, although in reality we saw maybe five or six of them. Certainly their sign—beaten, heavily traveled trails and lots of bear droppings—was everywhere. To take this photo, our group climbed in the Zodiac inflatable used for shore excursions, and our naturalist Nicholas motored as close as he dared while this bear was munching on barnacles at low tide. He then cut the engine and we drifted in closely, actually beaching the boat. We quietly watched and photographed for perhaps half an hour before the bear became tired of the paparazzi and headed up this slope for the woods.
Here, Mom serenely munches shoreline sedges while her adolescent offspring gambols in the background. Moments later, the two got into a bit of a cuffing match; we could just barely see their movements in the tall grass.
