Glacier Bay 2002

The Delphinus rides at anchor near Lamplugh Glacier while we explore an iceberg-studded beach.

This year's trip was short—only five days aboard the 50-foot Delphinus—but we packed plenty of adventures into the short time span. As in previous voyages, we had quality up-close time with bears, whales and other large mammals. And then there was the ice, in all its moods and fantastic forms. And in spite of a lot of rain and overcast, the scenery didn't fail us. The wildflowers were the most beautiful I've ever seen in Alaska.

This year's trip began at Glacier Bay National Park headquarters at Bartlett Cove and concluded in the Tlingit Native American village of Hoonah.

From Bartlett Cove we headed north into Glacier Bay, overnighting next to Reid Glacier before exploring the northern reaches of Glacier Bay and then turning south to overnight in Fingers Bay. From Fingers Bay we motored out into Icy Strait and then turned north into the paradise known as Dundas Bay, a relatively unknown portion of Glacier Bay National Park.
