The Statue of Liberty is a welcoming icon for seafarers on our country's east coast. On the west coast it is the Golden Gate Bridge for those entering California from the vast reaches of the Pacific Ocean. Boiling rip tides, frequent fogs (in summer months only) and heavy ship traffic make this one of California's most memorable landmarks. Linking San Francisco, the "City of Light" and Marin County, notorious (often unfairly so) for its hot tubs and other accoutrements of the California lifestyle, the Golden Gate is a symbol of northern California culture. Because of the constantly changing light and because of what the bridge represents, the Golden Gate has proven an irresistible subject to generations of photographers.
