Anan Creek

This prime bear-viewing spot along Ernest Sound is protected from hunting. Numerous black and brown bears converge here for the annual feast of spawning salmon in late summer. Our group visited here in June, before the fish arrived, so few bears were around. However, the well-developed trail through the rainforest offered many wonderful photo ops. At left, a visitor views a distant bear.

(Below): Dwarf dogwood, also known as Canadian dogwood, and false lily of the valley provide a green tapestry near a rotting log.

Above: Massive skunk cabbage leaves seem almost magical when backlit.
Right: a fuzzy, long-distance view of a brown bear mother and one of her cubs.
A boardwalk winds through about a mile of rainforest, leading visitors to the falls, left, above.
Below: Aboard the Delphinus, long time exposures of the wake prove to be great fun!
