Tracy Arm

Short on time because of earlier mechanical failures on the boat, we did not spend a day in Tracy Arm on this trip. But we did the next best thing, which was to gawk at the huge icebergs grounded on the shallow moraine at the mouth of the arm.

Anchoring for the night near one of the islands, we heard the captain pulling the anchor up at about 4 a.m. Turns out a house-sized iceberg was drifting close to the boat. Although we were in no danger, some of us did wake up for a nice sunrise, as shown below.

Glacier ice, with its air bubbles squeezed out of it by tremendous pressure of the ice sheet, glows a vivid aquamarine.

Sometimes it takes on strange patterns, as shown below.
