Denali National Park, Alaska

In July 2006 two of us visited this unique park, staying at Camp Denali for several days and going on day-long outings into the park itself. This is a park of mountains--including Denali (officially known as Mt. McKinley), tallest peak in North America. Great expanses of tundra edge the 90-mile-long park road, which is mostly dirt. Most of the park is wilderness, however and not accessible by road. Because the wildlife is protected and visibility excellent, most visitors stand a good chance of seeing wildlife, including grizzly bears.

Reflection Pond, one of dozens of kettle ponds near Wonder Lake, shows off the park's tallest mountain, Denali, elevation 20,320 feet.
