Sitka's Russian past is evident at St.Michael's Cathedral (left) and at the reconstruction of this Russian guardhouse (above). But there's plenty more in this beautiful town. It is the location of the first Sitka Pioneers' Home (lower left), where long-time Alaska residents get the care they deserve. Sitka is a town edged by water on one side (below, right), and snow-capped mountains on the other.
Above: Volcanic in origin, St.Lazaria Island, in the open ocean southeast of Sitka, hosts tens of thousands of seabirds and has been designated a national wildlife refuge.

Above, right: Close to St. Lazaria, a group of sea otters peers cautiously at the photographer. Once near the brink of extinction, sea otters have made a remarkable comeback up and down the Alaska coast. Because certain groups may hunt them, otters are skittish around humans.
