Alaska 2007—Humpback Whales: Part II

A few more whale photos. These were all taken near Kupreanof Island. Whales often gather near shallow  shoreline shelves  or reefs to funnel food. Once the whales have found a “hot spot,” they will bubble feed for hours.

More bubble net feeding.

An idyllic scene showing one whale fluking, another whale spouting and a third about to fluke.

Seeing a 40-foot whale bursting out of the water is an unforgettable sight.

Whales jaws can extend more than 90 degrees as they feed.

Late into a long Alaska night, the whales feed.
